Mental Health: The Plight of Persons with Unsound Mind in Nigeria


Indubitably, there is social discrimination and abuse against persons with an unsound mind in Nigerian society. Legally, these persons are accorded with rights that are recognized locally and internationally. However, these rights are hardly enforced, and the society is unaware of the existence of such rights. Thus, it is against this backdrop that this paper X-rays these rights, the legal implications of being mentally ill, interrogates the deficiencies in our legal system, the lackadaisical attitude of the government and the society towards mental health care, and thus, make recommendations.
